Will Smith Tells Story of Going Broke & Landing Role as Fresh Prince of Bel Air

At this point, most should know that Fresh & Local are strong advocates for learning your craft/business, seizing opportunities, and having a strong grasp of your personal strengths. Well, Will Smith just came along and doubled down on the premise even more with his new viral video talking about how he became the Fresh Prince of Bel Air.

Shortly after his debut album went triple platinum, he found himself spending endlessly just for the sake of it and went broke. He forgot to pay his taxes and all his cars, jewelry, etc. were seized by the IRS - leading him back to taking public transportation as a celebrity. Will's girlfriend at the time was growing tired of him sitting around the house hiding from the world and gave him the idea of visiting the Arsenio Hall show, which he did reluctantly.

As fate would have it, that trip to Arsenio put him in position to meet an executive from NBC who then offered to take him to Quincy Jones' home for a party/meeting. Quincy Jones put Will on the spot to audition for the Fresh Prince of Bel Air role in front of everyone and nailed it. The rest is history, as they say. Of course there's probably more gritty details to this story and a longer period in which Will struggled to make ends meet before the television show was actually picked up by the network, but the underlying theme is to always stay prepared for the moment that can change everything. A lot of times we grow so pessimistic that we're willing to overlook golden opportunities or even try to postpone them out of fear, but Will Smith's case goes to show that giving it your all can pay off very handsomely. We sincerely hope all you creatives and entrepreneurs out there are ready for your moment.
