A Conversation With Symone Royale

Symone Royale is a soulful Pop artist originally from Houston, TX that now resides in Atlanta, GA. She began performing in church at a young age which allowed her to hone her skills as a vocalist, and those years of hard work have paid off tremendously. Now an adult, she's got a new project out called "Goin' Deep" that blends many genres and styles into an EP allowing Symone to dive further into her purpose as an artist and express herself freely. We had the opportunity to discuss with her how this project came about, her rich set of influences, and much more.

It’s a pleasure to have you on the Fresh & Local platform. Can you please tell us how you got into music?
Thank you for having me! I started my journey in music at a young age in the church. My father was a music minister/pastor while I was growing up, so I was always around it. Once I started performing in church more frequently, I began performing at school talent shows, funerals/weddings, which led to big events around Houston.

As a Houston native, it’s natural to draw comparisons to Destiny’s Child and Beyoncé. Did they have any influence on your music and who are some of the artists that inspired you in your development?
Absolutely. It was amazing to see girls who looked like me go after their dreams that were from the same city. They've always been a big inspiration! Outside of Houston artists, Chaka Khan, Prince, Janet Jackson, Childish Gambino, and The Weeknd have also inspired my development as an artist.

With so many indie artists pushing music in today’s landscapes, what are some of the things that help you stand out from the pack?
I believe my music itself makes me stand out. Most of my music is funk influenced, but I've always loved to experiment with different sounds and challenge myself in new ways.

Your most recent project “Goin’ Deep” features a wide variety of sounds within 7 songs. Can you share what the overall concept of the EP is and how has the reception been since the release in October?
"Goin' Deep" is about me walking in my truth, going deeper into my purpose, and going deeper into the woman God has called me to be. I initially wanted to release this project in early 2020, but had to push it back due to COVID 19. It was really frustrating at the time, but to be on the other side of everything feels rewarding.
We were excited to hear Troop Brand on “FaceTime,” he’s an artist we’ve also supported over the years. What was the inspiration behind making him the only guest feature on your project?
Troop and I had been talking about working together for a while before we actually worked on Facetime. I never had a feature on any of my past projects, so I wanted to do something different this time. I sent the hook to him and we decided to move forward and finish the song together that week.

We’ve heard you say in the past that success is being able to make a living doing what you love. How would you say you’ve been able to bring that success to life and what has that process been like amidst a global pandemic?
My life has definitely shifted since the pandemic, but it was all for the better. I still believe success is making money from doing what you love, however it feels even better when you make more money doing several different things you love. I was able to go back to school during the pandemic and study IT, which has already proven to be very beneficial. It feels great to have been able to tap into additional skills and interests that I never thought I would outside of music.
Your songs are very well written and sound on par with the industry standard - do you write all of your own music or do you have a team of collaborators that help bring your ideas to fruition?
Thank you so much! Yes, I write all of my music.

We’re definitely looking forward to seeing how your career continues to evolve. Would you mind sharing with us some of your plans for 2021?
For 2021, I plan to release more visuals and new music. Stay tuned!
